“Bye Danny, and enjoy your break.” Mrs. Samuel said patting his back. Her attention turned to me. “Toby. Do you need a ride home?”

“No Mrs. Samuel I’ll be fine.” I answered without looking at the woman who saved me from that horrible night a couple of weeks ago. If it wasn’t for her coming to my rescue, a black eye, chipped teeth, and broken rib, would have been the least of my worries.

I wasn’t surprised by what happened, should have seen it coming. Granny said it was God’s way of punishing me for being hardheaded and disobedient, for going over to the evil place, that housed my mother, but know butt whooping could stop me from seeing the woman I love.

Mrs. Samuel understood and decided to help. A few times she would drive me over to stake out the old raggedy house on the corner. We sat and snacked on candy bars and chips, while surveying the place like two undercover cops waiting for the bad guys to emerge. Things seemed to have been going smoothly until someone slammed a bat into her back window. After that scary ordeal, I lied and told her that I wouldn’t return just to keep her at a distance. She knew otherwise and said to call if I got into any trouble.
